ABOUT US

Who We Are

Formed in 1982 following a community consultation process conducted by the Women's Committee of Human Services Scarborough, the Scarborough Women's Centre is a non-profit, charitable organization (#10795-9660-RR0001).

The Centre facilitates the empowerment of any woman wanting to leave an abusive or isolating situation, so she can implement long term positive changes with confidence. We provide information, education and support services to assist women in the transition to economic and emotional independence.

In 2003, we received the City of Toronto Mayor's Community Safety Award in recognition of our work with abused women and their children. In 2008-2009, we are celebrating our 25th anniversary of incorporation. We have touched the lives of 150,000 women and their children during this time.

The Centre is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Our staff includes the Executive Director; Case Manager/Counsellor; Business Development Worker; Administrative Assistant; and special project staff. View the our list of Board and staff members.

The Centre is funded by federal, provincial, and municipal governments, foundations, corporations, individuals and special events.

Our Participants

Women using the Centre are from all walks of life, economic situations, ethno-racial backgrounds and ages. They come from every continent of the world. Many are dealing with violence, poverty, isolation and other health issues. Women benefit greatly from the connection developed with other women, the assurance that they are not alone and enrichment from the experiences of others.
