The Board

Board members are responsible for overall direction of the Centre and ensure that adequate resources are available. Board members also participate in one committee, including Fundraising, Strategic Planning, Board Governance, and Finance. Members of the Centre also participate in these committees. If you would like to nominate someone, please complete our Call for Nominations form.

Mandate of the Board

A non-profit charitable organization, SWC is managed by a community based, volunteer Board of Directors who set policy, plan, and ensure that adequate resources (financial, human, etc) are available to fulfill the agency mission. The Board meets regularly with the Executive Director to monitor agency progress and needs, and provide direction. The Executive Director is responsible for day-to-day operation of the agency, and is a resource to the Board. Board members do not engage in direct service activities with clients.

Board Recruitment Process

Women interested in Board membership will be interviewed by the Nominations Committee and a recommendation made to the Board. The Membership elects Board members at its Annual General Meeting each fall, for terms of three years. Should a vacancy arise, it may be filled through election by Board members at their monthly meeting, and ratified by the Membership at the Annual General Meeting. A New Board Member Orientation is offered to incoming Board members in August.

Committees

Each Board member also participates in a committee activity.

  1. Executive Committee comprises the President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and Past President, all of whom are signing officers of the Board.
  2. Fundraising Committee oversees the special events, corporate requests, direct mail campaigns and donor recognition to ensure adequacy of financial resources.
  3. Strategic Planning Committee, in cooperation with agency members, Board and staff, develops the strategic plan and monitors its progress.
  4. Finance Committee is responsible for stewardship of the Centre’s financial resources.
  5. Board Governance Committee supports the work of the Board.

Other committees are established on an ad-hoc basis.

Time Commitment

The Board meets from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. once a month. With Committee work, most Board members contribute 10 hours per month to the Centre.

For further information, or to indicate your interest in Board membership, contact Lynda Kosowan, MSW, RSW, Executive Director. Nominations must be accompanied by a current curriculum vita and/or letter indicating interest, and is followed by an interview with the Nominations committee. The Committee brings its recommendations to the membership at the Annual General Meeting in September of each year.
