YOUNG WOMEN'S OUTREACH

Introduction

Scarborough Women's Centre is expanding its services to young women, by providing educational workshops and volunteer opportunities.

Special thanks to the City of Toronto's Community Safety Investment (CSI) Program and Mackenzie Financial Charitable Foundation.

Purpose

We hope to help better prepare young women for their future, as they become aware of the issues they face and to help them make positive choices in their lives.

Educational Workshops

Workshops will now be provided to young women in small groups (10 to 15) with a trained facilitator. Topics include:

Mentoring Program

Need extra support? Young women can be matched with a mentor during the school year (September to April) to help make your transition from high school to post-secondary or entering the workforce.

Volunteer Opportunities

As part of our expansion to meet the needs of young women, we are now offering two different positions to volunteer with the centre.

Young Women's Peer Outreach Volunteer

This position is open to women between the ages of 15 to 19 to help increase awareness on young women's issues at the Centre. Volunteers will be responsible for:

  • Spreading awareness on young women's issues
  • Working on creative projects that address young women's issues (e.g. zines, posters, pamphlets)
  • Attending training to learn the essential tools in outreach
  • Attending weekly meetings for three months

As a volunteer, you will:

  • Earn volunteer community hours
  • Help bring awareness on young women's issues, such as eating disorders, teen dating violence, young women's health and depression
  • Learn essential outreach skills, which can also be used in your daily life
  • A safe place to meet with other young women to talk about the issues you face
  • Experience working in the community

Mentor

This position is open to women between 21 to 25 to become a mentor for young women who are in their last year of high school and need support by helping them plan for post-secondary education or employment. Training will be provided and the commitment is from September to April.

As a mentor you will gain:

  • Valuable experience in providing one-on-one support
  • Help young women plan for their future

Please Note: Young women of limited income who are participating in workshops, or as volunteers can request for assistance on transportation costs.
