VOLUNTEER - YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Scarborough Women's Centre (SWC) is a community-based, non-profit charitable organization. The work and dedication of volunteer members is crucial to the effectiveness of the Centre. Our mission is to facilitate the empowerment of any woman wanting to leave an abusive or isolating situation, so that she can implement long-term positive changes with confidence. Below are some of the ways you can become involved at SWC:

DIRECT SERVICE VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Administration and Referral Volunteer: Provides reception and administrative support to the Centre. Refers callers and visitors to appropriate services based on their needs.

Host: The Host makes sure that the registration and start of our educational workshops goes smoothly. She contributes to a welcoming and safe environment for participants. She assists the workshop facilitator wherever possible to set up materials for the course.

Literacy/English Conversation Tutor: The Tutor provides one-to-one mentoring and support to an individual woman looking to improve literacy and/or English conversation skills. The volunteer and her friend will agree to meet together for six months to one year, to work on specific learning goals the friend has identified.

Supportive Mentor: Provides mentoring and support to an individual woman going through a transition in her life (e.g. leaving an abusive situation, divorce/separation, relocation to a new area, loss of employment, etc.). The volunteer and her friend will agree to meet together for six months to one year, to work on specific goals the friend has identified.

To become a Direct Service Volunteer, you must complete a Volunteer Application and fax, e-mail or mail the form to the Centre. Receipt of your application will be confirmed and you will be contacted by the Coordinator of Volunteers to arrange an interview. This interview takes just over an hour.Only those selected for an interview will be contacted. If all goes well at the screening interview, two references will be checked. References are the names and numbers of individuals you know personally or through business.

Before you become a Direct Service Volunteer, you will receive 21 hours of training that will provide insight into women's issues and will provide you with the skills to build a successful relationship with our service users. Training is given on Mondays from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. for seven weeks. The suggested fee for this training is $30. Women of limited income are welcome to request a subsidy.
